Bernie & Sarah

Bernie & Sarah tied the knot on May 23, 2009. It was such a beautiful day, blue sky, with fluffy cumulus clouds in the sky. They had a very nice family wedding in the west Edmonton / downtown area, pictures at the legislature grounds, the Strathcona Street Car, and outside the Garneau Theatre. Lots of variety for photography. We were all scared that we would get some rain, and have to break out the umbrellas, when we met for our confirmation coffee meeting. Alberta weather has become so unpredictable lately. But it all seems to turn out in the end, we got sunshine and the street car miraculously showed up on cue. Congrats Bernie & Sarah!!!!!! Here are my favorites from the day.

Today, we had a lil fun in the studio.  We had some old background paper hanging around and boxes, so we thought it would be fun to construct a car for Olianna and make it into a photo shoot.  It just happened to end up looking like a Jeep.  Olianna loves her car. We all love our first cars, don't we!  To keep true to our goal to be green, once Olianna is tired of her car and  ready to move onto a much flashier new one, we'll take all the pieces to our local recycling center. Here is a pic of her first car.

IT'S ALMOST TIME FOR THE FAMILY PORTRAIT AGAIN!

Last Fall, I was invited to submit my answers to a few questions posted by a freelance writer, writing an article for Sun media on Family Portraiture, so I have decided to post my answers to these questions.  Being that, with warmer weather fast approaching, many families will be looking at getting their annual portrait taken, I hope these answers will remind us all  why we get them done. Which reminds me, we need to get one done soon!

Why do you think family portraits are important?
- The family portrait is meant to convey the family's character and be a record of the family looking their best and having a fun time.  Most often these portraits are commonly on display within the first 10 feet of entering someone's home, showing that these people take pride in their family life.

How often should these portraits be taken?
- Preferably once a year, while all the children are still at home.  Then as children leave home and get married, whenever the family can reunite, their is a new addition, or milestone achieved.

My photography tips on how to get the best family portrait.

Coordinating clothing is the goal, but be careful not to dress your family in identical attire.  You don't want to look like you are all wearing uniforms.  A great tip for making sure your clothes coordinate for the photograph is to lay out each family members clothing choices on the bed.  If an outfit catches your eye, it needs to be replaced.  You don't have to be all the same color, just the same intensities.

Locations- Go to a place you all love: the beach, your lakefront cabin, a local amusement park, local landmark or even your own home.  Outdoor locations work the best, because they make the family more relaxed and they add a story to the photograph.  The best time for outdoor photographs is early morning or late afternoon to evening when the sun is not so harsh.

Go for a less traditional portrait look!

Go GREEN!

The last few weeks during some down time I have been working on a strategy to limit ourcarbon  footprint on the global environment, and moving towards a greener studio.  I am ready to embark on this journey to go green.  I'll start with small changes.  For example, the first steps will be:

* Switching out our old incandescent light bulbs.
* Keeping the lights off during the day, open the blinds instead and enjoy natural light.
*Using re-useable water bottles while we are shooting on - location, instead of stopping by the corner store and buying the pre-bottled plastic variety.
* Using both sides of paper, which will cut our paper consumption in half.
* Reduce office supply use by reusing envelopes, writing notes on scrap paper, using 100% recycled paper products.
* Joining a blue box program to recycle our paper, cardboard, & beverage containers.
* Recycling our printing cartridges,  Staples will take them in for recycling.

Here is a link to a article that discusses how photographers can join in on going green.

Maybe even a hybrid car, if more weddings come rolling my way.

Baby Brady

While in High Prairie last weekend we had the privilege to photograph baby Brady, he was such a good baby during the whole session and even while it was his buddy Hannah's turn too.  Brady is just over a month old and has 10 times the amount of hair than my 6 month old.  I hope you love your pics Brad & Mel.  Here are my favs.

Hannah's Photo Shoot

Last weekend, we took a drive out to High Prairie, which is just 3.5 hrs out of the city.  We scheduled three photo shoots there for the long weekend.  The first was with Hannah, she is almost two years old and so adorable and energetic.  I wish I had the same energy, then I wouldn't need to have coffee to give me a jump start.  These are my favorite pics of Hannah.
